According to campus police, at least three people were killed and several others were injured in a shooting at Michigan State University. The suspected attacker died from a gunshot wound that appeared to be self-inflicted.
On Monday, university police tweeted that shots were fired in two locations: near Berkey Hall, an academic building, and IM East, an athletic facility.
Following a report of shots fired around the East Lansing campus, Michigan State University (MSU) police initially ordered students and staff to shelter in place.
An alert was sent shortly after 8.30pm by the university’s police department, advising students to “run, hide, fight”.
MSU police announced at 12.30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, after a four-hour search, that the suspected shooter had been found dead off campus.
While appealing for public assistance, police said it was unclear what motivated the attack and that efforts to identify the suspect were ongoing.
