According to a senior official, bankrupt Sri Lanka plans to postpone the municipal elections scheduled for next month, which sparked opposition rallies on Tuesday and the adjournment of parliament.
The vote on March 9 was intended to be a significant indicator of public support for President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was elected in July following months of unrest over a catastrophic economic situation.
Elections, according to the president, are not conceivable since there is not enough state revenue to cover salaries, pensions, and the maintenance of basic services.
