Labour Party's legal team meets with INEC to examine election materials

The INEC national headquarters hosted the meeting with authorities to begin the process of inspecting the voting equipment used in the February 25 presidential election.

There were 60 lawyers on the legal team, chaired by Dr. Livy Uzoukwu.

The legal team received assurances from INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu that the electoral body will disclose all the records needed to support their argument.

“INEC has nothing to hide. Documents available at the HQ will be given immediately,” Yakubu was quoted as saying.

“We are meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners today and we will discuss how other documents at the state level could also be made available to you speedily.”

On election day, INEC faced criticism for failing to post the results of the presidential election from all polling places across the federation to its Results Viewing Portal.

As a result, party representatives from the Labour Party, Peoples Democratic Party, and other parties staged a walkout from the National Collation Centre in Abuja in opposition to the collation and results announced by the commission.

Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress was proclaimed the winner of the election by INEC early on March 1, 2023, disregarding the protests of the opposing parties. Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, who received 6.9 million votes, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, who received 6.1 million votes, trailed Tinubu by around 8.8 million votes.

Dissatisfied with the election results and declaration, the Labour Party requested permission to inspect the election materials used by the commission during the February 25 elections, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, which was the main technology used during the elections to enhance a free and fair process. The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal granted the request.
