Nasir El-Rufai, Governor of Kaduna State, claimed on Sunday that the Central Bank of Nigeria embarked on currency confiscation rather than the announced currency swap policy for currency redesign approved by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd).
Buhari stated in his state broadcast that the old N200 note would indeed be legal currency during the next 60 days, until April 10, 2023, while imploring Nigerians to remit old N500 and 1000 notes with the Central Bank of Nigeria.
El-Rufai, who was dissatisfied with Buhari’s broadcast, criticized the President for his directive, which he claimed was in violation of a February 8 Supreme Court order preventing the Federal Government from halting its cash swap policy on February 10.
However, in a series of tweets posted on his Twitter handle on Sunday, the Kaduna governor stated that the bank only confiscated currency that was not available under the currency swap policy.
