Claims that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) ordered commercial banks to reissue 500 and 1000 naira notes are untrue.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife, Aisha Buhari, stated on her Instagram page on Tuesday that the CBN has ordered the issuance of the old notes.

A few hours later, the CBN denied making the claim and called it “false news.”

The old 500 and 1000 notes have ceased to be legal cash as ordered by Buhari, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) stated in a tweet along with an initial statement, adding “Please be aware of bogus news.”
